gVisor is being donated to CNCF
Google is transferring gVisor’s project stewardship to the CNCF, aiming to make the Linux application-kernel sandbox easier to contribute to, integrate, and adopt beyond Google.
The CNCF accepted the donation on September 28, 2026. The transition is still ahead: the project plans to move its repository out of Google’s GitHub organization, adopt public build and test infrastructure, add non-Google maintainers with merge rights, and eventually use organization-based governance. Ant Group, Modal, and Tines have committed to long-term maintainer roles; OpenAI, Tencent, and NVIDIA are listed as continuing contributors.
The maintainers say broader stewardship could help address adoption and performance-perception barriers, including making it easier to upstream Linux patches that improve gVisor. Those are the project team’s stated goals, not evidence that the transfer has already changed gVisor’s security or performance. The Lobsters submission had 6 points and no comments, so there were no reader reactions to summarize.
