r/rust raises the bar for project-announcement posts
The moderators now treat bare links to ordinary Rust repositories as low-effort, unless the project is genuinely groundbreaking. The October 4 update also applies the standard to developer tools and says project announcements and articles cannot be AI-generated. Established libraries can still announce releases; a new library needs sustained work, a full article explaining its relevance, and a comparison with alternatives. Casual project sharing moves to a weekly thread.
The highly upvoted discussion mostly welcomed the change as a way to reduce AI-generated spam and make room for technical posts. Some commenters worried that useful small hobby projects will get buried in the weekly thread; others said the old flow of GitHub links had become hard to curate and even human projects were being dismissed as AI slop. The moderators’ stated aim is to keep project posts that invite substantive Rust discussion, not to ban project news outright.
