Iroh explores permissionless global content discovery
Iroh is working toward making content findable across the internet without depending on one central catalog—a goal the project frames as useful for keeping websites and other content reachable even when networks are filtered. Its September 30 post looks to BitTorrent’s Mainline DHT as a proven model and separates discovery from the data-transfer protocol. Iroh’s blob layer already uses BLAKE3-verified streaming over QUIC; the post discusses how a similarly open discovery layer could fit alongside it.
The nine-comment Lobsters thread was enthusiastic but raised practical questions. Readers discussed IPFS’s funding and performance problems, alternatives such as DHT- or DNS-based coordination, and whether UDP address discovery could be spoofed. Iroh contributors said relays remain available when direct connections fail and can be self-hosted; they also pointed to padded requests and signed communication as limits on spoofing abuse.
