Valve’s Work On Foveated Rendering For The Open-Source Turnip Driver On The Steam Frame
Valve has developed foveated-rendering support for Mesa’s open-source Turnip Vulkan driver, helping the Steam Frame’s Adreno GPU spend more work on the user’s gaze area and less on peripheral regions.
The XDC presentation details how Turnip uses Vulkan fragment-density-map extensions with Adreno’s tiled rendering, including handling per-eye multiview and layered rendering for existing PC VR content. It also spells out real constraints: multisampling can disable density-map use, and SteamVR does not yet support the subsampled-image path. The slides describe Adreno 800 support, RenderDoc record/replay, and SteamVR/game-engine integration as future work, not finished features.
