Dutch public-sector community is building a reproducible digital workplace around NixOS

DAWO is an open collaboration to develop a digitally autonomous workplace for Dutch government—not yet a finished, nationwide Microsoft replacement. Its blueprint breaks the stack into replaceable parts, including DAWO-NixOS, installation tooling, cloud infrastructure, collaboration software, and open AI components.

The NixOS piece uses declarative configuration to describe and rebuild workstation state; DAWO’s technology page lists version 0.1.2 as its latest stable release (August 15, 2026). The project’s stated goals include verifiability, security, and shared development across government, industry, and civil society.

HN commenters liked the reproducibility and potential for European public-sector collaboration, while questioning whether NixOS is practical to support on user desktops and noting that the effort is still fragmented across related initiatives. Several also corrected the thread’s headline framing: this is an evolving community blueprint, not evidence that Dutch agencies have already replaced Microsoft at scale.
